EcoProducts is awarded Halal Certification for Baobab Powder and Baobab Oil

There are a growing number of halal consumers in the EU and US and millions more across the world who require halal compliant products.   Food manufacturers and distributors require food ingredients that are halal certified in order to meet the demands of their customers.

EcoProducts can now offer halal certified baobab powder to manufacturers and ingredient wholesalers so that they can increase their offering to their customers.

Baobab powder is used as a food ingredient in a wide range of products from smoothies to health bars all of which require halal compliance if marketed to Muslim communities.

Baobab Oil is used as a cosmetic ingredient in personal care products, such as creams and serums.

As EcoProducts’ baobab oil is a halal approved ingredient, it can now can be sold to manufacturers of halal compliant cosmetics.

What is halal?

Halal originates from rules set out in the Qur’an and the Hadith.  Halal does not only pertain to food, but is part of a system of morals to guide Muslims’ actions and behaviour. Halal means “permissible” and can refer to any aspect of life covered by the teachings of Islam.  Since food and cosmetics are an important part of daily life, these consumer products carry a special significance. Islamic philosophy propounds that halal products support not only physical constitution but also moral character and spiritual upliftment.

Halal Food

Although non-meat items are neutral in terms of Islamic Law, the processing procedures, food additives, preparation areas, etc. also must be free from non-Halal contaminants. A Halal Authority is required to inspect, evaluate and approve all the relevant areas of the raw materials and the manufacturing process in order for Halal to be granted. A halal certified product means that the product is permissible or acceptable in accordance with Islamic law.

Halal Cosmetics

In recent years there has been an increasing demand for the development and sale of halal cosmetics, and companies worldwide have responded. Halal cosmetics have been on the rise since 2013 and sales are estimated to hit well over $60 billion within the next 5-10 years globally. Halal cosmetics implies not only adherence to ingredients, but also the source of the ingredients and manner in which they’re manufactured, as well as the avoidance of animal testing and animal cruelty.

Why is Halal Certification necessary?

Halal certification is necessary for Muslims to decide what products to buy.  Modern food and cosmetic processing and globalized markets make it hard for Muslims to know how products were produced and where they came from.  To get around this, a system has been put in place that checks whether products meet the requirements of being halal.  It is similar to any other food certification and audit system such as kosher and organic certification.

EcoProducts meets the growing demands of our customers

In addition to halal certification, EcoProducts is also certified Organic, FSSC 2200, Kosher and FairWild.  This suite of certifications allows EcoProducts to offer its customers world class products and services to meet the demands of consumers for credible and transparent food and cosmetic products.

We’re so grateful for the generosity of Nancy Nehoray who has donated to two Pre-school creches in rural areas of the Limpopo. Creches and pre-schools are sadly neglected when it comes to basic resources for the children. So it’s always BIG news when we receive donations for much needed equipment and facilities.

How baobab’s heal themselves…

Recently, friend and baobab fan Shona sent through this delightful photo taken near Xigera Reserve, Okavango Delta in April this year.  It shows their guide pointing out elephant damage to a baobab tree.  It’s old elephant damage and you can see in the picture how the wound has healed over with new bark.  It’s quite wonderful how baobabs manage to […]
